It’s Quinn’s third Halloween and this is my favorite costume yet: the Man in the Yellow Hat, Curious George’s famous keeper. George is number one in our house, so Quinn was crazy-excited to get to dress up as his best pal. He asks to wear the costume every day!
I found the boots, belt, and yellow pants on Amazon; I bought a second-hand white button-down shirt and dyed it with RIT lemon yellow dye; I ordered the yellow tie on Amazon and painted on the black spots with fabric paint; and I made the yellow hat from scratch. I’m talking a hat mold carved out of styrofoam, painfully stretched wet felt, hat stiffening glue, “swirling” the Petersham ribbon… I’m basically a milliner now. I spent an inordinate amount of time making the hat (and this is actually version 2.0–the first model didn’t quite fit his head!), but I’m not sorry–the hat makes the whole costume! And Quinn loves it. He can’t wait to wear it trick-or-treating.
The kid also loves a pumpkin patch. October just might be my favorite month of the year…
Happy Halloween to all!
